Heat 1 – 1st September 6:30 PM
Heat 2 – 8th September 5 PM
Heat 3 – 15th September 5 PM
Heat 4 – 22nd September 5 PM
Heat 5 – 29th September 5 PM
Heat 6 – 6th October 5 PM

Sam finished 3rd in the strong round-robin Rubinstein Memorial, gaining 8 rating points in the process. Our friend and long time academy member Stanislaw Praczukowski was there as well to meet and talk to Sam in person.

We are very happy when we see our members succeed. Kushal, one of our first students, played in Abu Dhabi Open 2024, where he earned his first IM norm with two rounds to spare and missed narrowly a GM norm by half a point! Well done to Kushal and his private coach GM Ankit Rajpara! The hard work is just beginning!

Another member of our academy scored his second IM norm, also missing the GM norm narrowly. We want to congratulate him for his hard work during classes and homeworks!

Renier has been fighting on the 3rd board in the Spanish League against a strong line-up. He scored 3.5/7 and gained 2 rating points. His team, AIMPULSA GRANADA started as the 2nd worst ranked, but finished 4th, defeating the leaders in round 6. He will be back this week to present Friendly Homework and Tactical Targets. We have more great news – Renier’s first book Playing the Nimzo-Indian was published this week!

Yahli Sokolovsky played in Dortmund. He scored 7/9, finishing 5th and gaining 7 rating points.

Doug has been playing in the St. Louis Class Championship. He tied for first with promising St. Louis junior player Alex Zhang who scored a spectacular win over new SLU GM Nikolozi Kacharava. He won a very nice strategic game in the last round, which you can see here .

Have you been playing any tournaments? We want to know!

See you in class!

What is the format for the championship? Do you qualify per heat or is it a cumulative result? And how many qualify?

The top two players overall and u2100 will qualify for the final. It is a cumulative result; three best results will be counted to calculate the top scorers. We will use the following points system:

place points
1st 20
2nd 15
3rd 10
4th 8
5th 6
6th 5
7th 4
8th 3
9th 2
10th 1

What happened in the 2nd heat? The final table looks rather weird

Not sure, looks like Lichess disqualified the top 2 finishers. It could be for many reasons, such as having multiple accounts. We will not presume cheating, but it would be unfair to the other players if the tournament did not feel fair, especially since this is a friendly event. There are no prizes at all. The players can participate again next year, but they will have to sit out this year.
We will not count their results from this heat and will start giving the championship points from the 3rd place onward in this heat.
